Staying Fit Over the Christmas Period: What You Need to Know

Wed 23rd December 2020     Written by Pete Ebbutt

With Christmas just round the corner, many of us are likely to stray from our usual diets. Undoubtedly part of the reason why gyms and fitness centres are packed with new members every January, many of us believe it’s difficult to fit training into our partying schedule and tend to start again with the New Year.

It is, however, possible to enjoy the Christmas and New Year break and stay fit at the same time! Not sure how? Don’t worry!

The team at Parkway Fitness have listed their three top ways to get the balance just right, so you can have the relaxing break you deserve while still hitting your fitness goals!

Stay hydrated

When it comes to health and fitness, water remains essential to your journey. Over Christmas, drinking plenty of water can help to keep your metabolism moving and can help with any hangovers!

Not only this but drinking lots of water can help to reduce sugar cravings and keep you from constantly snacking when you’re surrounded by food.

Set realistic goals

It’s very common for people to take a step back from their usual fitness goals over the holiday period, so make sure you adjust your goals to reflect your new routine. For example, if you’re trying to lose or gain weight but are switching out your diet and workouts over the Christmas period, make sure you change your weight goals so you don’t feel disappointed when you don’t achieve them.

You should also set realistic diet plans. Trying to restrain from eating treats completely is a difficult task, especially with Christmas food, adverts and gifts everywhere you look. Feel free to enjoy the treats you love, but have small portions! Moderation is key.

Stay active

It’s completely fine to enjoy your treats over the Christmas period, especially after the difficult year we have had, however where possible, stick to your fitness routine. If you’re too busy to the gym, purchase some of your own new or used gym equipment and fit your workouts into your plans!

As soon as you get out of bed, do a quick (or long) workout to set you up positively for the day. Alternatively, spend some time with your family outdoors and on a walk this Christmas.
